The Great Alaskan Bowl Company
Need a really unique gift from Alaska to take home to a loved one?
The Great Alaskan Bowl
Company is one of the few remaining wooden bowl mills, where visitors are
encouraged to watch as state-of-the-art equipment turns freshly cut Alaskan birch trees
into beautifully finished wooden bowls.
You can watch as the craftsmen fashion up to 8 one-piece solid hardwood bowls
from a single split log (nested, you can follow the grain of the tree all the way through
the 8 bowls!). It is suggested that you call ahead to make sure they are working on a
batch when you arrive.
The bowls are usually cut from about April or May right up
through December. Even if you arrive in the winter, with 16,000 sq feet
for floor space, there is still lots to see: equipments, a video, etc. The bowls are available for purchase either as is, or filled with your choice
of a huge selection of Alaskan made goodies. In fact, they carry
only
Alaskan made products.
They are located at 4630 Old Airport Road (turn south at turnoff from Airport
Road), just west of Fred Meyers. The factory/showroom is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
throughout the summer. Winter hours (until around Mothers' Day) are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
