Major event highlights are still here. Not all events have been updated to 2007; be sure to notice dates, and use phone numbers supplied if out of date. You can highlight what you want and just print your selection, or print all.

Gulliver's Books Book signing (10/1/05) Two Pacific Northwest authors with new books on northern themes, 5 p.m., Gulliver's Books, 3525 College Road. Authors are Robert Goldstein, author of memoir, "The Gentleman from Finland: Adventures on the Trans-Siberian Express," and Ron Lovell, author of the mystery thriller, "Murder Below Zero."

Carhartt & Flannel Ball (10/4/02)  Dance from 8:00pm - 12:00am at the Chena River Convention Center, 109 Clay St, . Hosted by the Alaska Boreal Forest Council, the evening will be filled with live music, fabulous desserts, dancing, door prizes, and good company. Prizes also awarded for best dressed.  Cost: $25.00 for individuals, $40.00 for couples. (907) 457-8453.

Science Books Discussion Group (10/4/05) 7 p.m. at Noel Wien Library Conference Room. The book is "Portraits in Discovery: Profiles in Scientific Genius," by George Greenstein. (907) 455-6723.

Rain, Shine or Snow – Predicting Interior Weather! (10/5/02) 10 a.m.-Noon Saturday Family Program. Learn to identify clouds and predict upcoming weather. Follow the journey of a drop of water from the ocean to the Chena River. Find out why we have cold winters and warm summers. Make a cloud mobile to take home. Presented with staff from the National Weather Service Forecast Office.

42nd Annual Cham Fashional (10/5/02) Sponsored by Quota International Fairbanks. "You Oughta be in Pictures." Will be held at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel Gold Room, 7 p.m. (cocktails - champagne & hors d'oeuvres), choreographed Fashion Show at 8 p.m.,  dance till 1 a.m. to live music.  This is an annual fundraiser for Quota International Fairbanks, whose special interest is disadvantaged women & children, and those with speech & hearing impairments. In 2001, this clever & witty show was written and directed by Fairbanks' own Jason Hodges, creator of "Athena". Come support a great community service organization while enjoying champagne, hors d'oeuvres, and great fashions, then dance the night away with the great live dance band "Nostalgic Jam".  Call 490-2325 for tickets; $75 per person or $650 for a table of 10. This is a fundraiser this year to benefit the Breast Cancer Detection Center.

HIPOW Public Auction (10/6-7/05) (see dinner auction later for 10/8) Monroe Catholic Junior Senior High School gym, 615 Monroe Street. Free admission, doors open @6 p.m., auction @ 7 p.m. More information on the auction will be posted on http://www.catholic-schools.org. A few days earlier there is usually an Art Preview Night, 5-7 p.m. to preview the art up for auction at HIPOW.

HIPOW Black Tie Dinner & Auction (10/8/05) By advance reservation only, tickets are $100 per seat. Saturday night the doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner is at 6:30, and the auction begins at  7  p.m. Call 456-7970 for information and tickets. HIPOW is the largest fundraiser for catholic Schools of Fairbanks, with more than 2,500 donated items.

All Books Considered Reading Group (10/10/05) 5:30 p.m. at Noel Wien Library Conference Room. The book is "Bookseller of Kabul" by Asne Seierstad. (907) 459-1020.

Bald Eagles of Haines & Interior Alaska (10/10/05) Sponsored by Arctic Audubon Society. Watching the huge concentration of balk eagles that gather along the Chilkat River in Haines is an experience not to be missed. Michael Aronin, Night of Comedy 2005 (10/13/05)Westmark Gold Room (sign language interpreted) 7:30 p.m.. Glen Anderson will open. General admission $35 ahead, $45 at the door. Corporate table for 6 including special refreshments, $300. Tickets at FRA and Hoitts Underground Sound. This is a fundraiser for Fairbanks Resource Agency.

Focus on Fairbanks (Opened 10/14/02) Celebrate Alaska's Golden Heart City — Past, Present and Future There’s still gold in those hills! A hundred years after Felix Pedro struck gold in the hills north of town, Fairbanks is a thriving city ­ rich in culture and resources. Explore the Museum’s galleries to learn about the gold rush days, building the Alaska Highway, the aurora borealis ­ and what we’re planning for the future. In the Interior Gallery, UAF Museum. Goes at least through November; may be extended.

19th Annual Fbks International Friendship Day (10/15/05) noon to 5 p.m. Pioneer Park, Alaskan Centennial Center for the Arts. Free. Entertainment, music, cultural displays, food, and gifts for sale.(907) 474-0908.

UAF Museum Gala Celebration (10/15/05) An elegant evening with food, sparkling drinks and live music, to celebrate the opening of a new wing of the University of Alaska Museum of the North, 7 p.m. Tickets $75. (907) 474-7505.

Native Film Festival (10/16, 17, 19/06) Pioneer Park Theater, 6-10 p.m.  In conjunction with the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention in Fairbanks. Selections from the Alaska Center for Documentary Film will be shown. Free. (907) 474-7505.

Alaska Day! (10/18/07)

Oktoberfest (10/20/06) Sponsored by German Club of Fairbanks, American Legion Post 57, 1634 Cushman St. German food served 6-9 p.m. $15 single or $25 couple. Music, food and fun. (907) 452-5457.

Halloween Carnival (10/26/06) Sponsored by West Valley High School, an annual event. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., all children through sixth grade, at West Valley7 High School. $1 per child. 1 can donation for the Fairbanks Community Food Bank buys 1 game ticket (two per child only).  (907) 474-4221, ext. 171.

“Reading From Alaska’s Heart Fundraiser”, (10/27/07) sponsored by Adult Learning Programs of Alaska (ALPA) featuring local writers reading from their works.  An evening venue of distinction for published writers, Reading From Alaska's Heart brings together several talents from Alaska to read from their works and fellowship with community members. This annual event serves as Adult Learning Programs of Alaska's major fundraiser and is supported by corporate, business and individual donors as well as our distinguished writers.  Refreshments and music will be provided. 7:00 pm at The Binkley Room, Pike’s Waterfront Lodge. Tickets in 2005 were are $20/person or $50/family and were available at ALPA, Owl Tree, If Only…A Fine Store, Hunting & Gathering and at the door. Fall Festival (10/31/07) A Christian alternative to trick-or-treat. Games, candy, fun. University Baptist Church 65:30 to 8:30 p.m. Children are invited to wear their costumes (avoid witches and ghosts please).

Museum Halloween (10/31/07) 6 to 8 p.m. Annual event. Come in from the cold to go trick-or-treating at the Museum and see bugs, bats, birds and more emerge from the Museum’s collections. For costumed trick-or-treaters ages 12 and under with their adult chaperones. FREE!

Far North Conservation Film Festival: (11/3-4/07) This two-day festival has times and location to be determined. The Far North Conservation Film Festival (www.farnorthfilms.com) presents a diverse group of outstanding films about the conservation and sustainability of wildlife, wild places and cultures around the world.

University Women's Association Annual Christmas Bazaar (11/5, 6/06) Large popular bazaar featuring crafters from around Alaska for savvy Christmas shoppers. Features food court, free admission and different crafters each day. Parking available at Farmers Loop lot with shuttle bus service to campus. Proceeds to benefit college scholarships, UAF Wood Center, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The rest of this info is from 2002, so call ahead to confirm - Vendors pay $60, or $30 for half table.  More for wall and/or electrical outlets. Athabascan Fiddlers' Festival (11/6-9/02). Traditional Athabascan Indian fiddling and dancing. Dedicated to the tradition of Athabascan fiddling and dancing. Dancing, guitar-playing, fiddling and performances by village representatives. Athabascan Fiddlers Association. "The Athabascan Fiddlers Festival has grown tremendously over the past 20 years to become one of the three major cultural events of the year," according to festival founder, Jean Flanagan Carlo. Annual Auction/Light Dinner 11/9/02) Northern Alaska Environmental Center. Social hour begins at 6 p.m., auction at 7. Chena river Convention Center, $15 donation at door. To donate auction item or learn more, call (907) 452-5021 or email auction@northern.org.

Military Appreciation Day (11/12/05) Noon to 5 p.m. at the University of Alaska Museum of the North. The Museum salutes the Interior’s military personnel, veterans and their families. Explore the galleries, visit with Alaska Native artists, and enjoy hands-on ctivities for kids. FREE! (907) 474-7505.

The Holiday Marketplace (11/11-13/05) More than 165 vendors (crafts and artisans) from around the state. Carlson Center.  Day care provided by Gymnastics, Inc., door prizes, pictures with Santa, entertainment. $4 admission, children 12 and under free. Fri. 12-8, Sat. 10-7, Sun. 11-5.  In 2001. vendors paid $525 for the three days, 10X10 space which includes 6 ft. table, chairs, walls, 8" by 40" sign. Generally 8,000 to 9,000 in attendance. Annual Christmas Book Sale and Signing (11/19/06) Alaska Library Association, North Chapter. Noel Wien Library, noon to 4 p.m. Proceeds used to bring authors to Fairbanks. (907) 488-2271.

 Top of the World Classic (11/21-24/02) The farthest north NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament, featuring teams this year from around the nation and the host UAF Nanooks. Annual St. Raphael's Christmas Ball and Auction (11/22/06) Westmark Hotel Gold Room; 6 p.m.-midnight. Fundraiser, quilt raffle, dancing, and a silent auction with over 700 items. Thanksgiving Day (11/22/07) HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Happy Thanksgiving!
If you happen to be in town for the holidays, check our restaurant page for your turkey dinner with all the fixings. Many churches will have special services on either Thanksgiving, or on Wednesday, the 21st.

UAF Museum Store Holiday Sale (11/29/02-12/24/02) Take care of everyone on your holiday shopping list at the Museum Store. All coiled grass, baleen, willow root and birch bark baskets – hand-made by Alaska Native artists across the state – are 20% off. All other store merchandise is 10% off – books, jewelry, fleece and more.

Downtown Association of Fairbanks/Main Street (2001?) is working hard to make a winter wonderland into a glittering reality with fun-packed activities, bringing the family together during Winter Solstice activities scheduled for each Saturday in the month of December.

They have something special planned this year for the Cushman Street Bridge. Holiday lighting has been expanded to include new displays on the bridge, the riverfront, and all the way down Cushman Street as well as additional areas and decorations in the downtown area. They plan on lighting up Fairbanks as never have before. In addition, there will be a family-oriented series of activities on the ground floor of the Sadler's building; Santa's Clearing House will be receiving food, clothing and gift items; rumors are that Santa will be there himself on certain days too! With music, storytelling, sleigh rides and other holiday events, they have planned activities which focus on bringing family and community together.

Candle Lighting Service (12/04/05) Always the first Sunday in December. Celebrate the Christmas season in North Pole, Alaska. 2 p.m. at North Pole High School. Tree lighting same day at Santa's RV Park next to Santa Claus House, 5 p.m. (907) 488-2242. For over thirty years, North Pole has been holding this Candelighting Ceremony to begin the Christmas season. This is an important Chamber function.  The Program focus is on local children, and others who have made great contributions to the North Pole community. Each year an excellent show of talent and inspiration is planned. After the candelighting ceremony is finished there will be time for a little refreshment and mingling.

North Pole Winter Festival (12/2, 3/06) Food, information and vendor booths with activities, demonstrations and entertainment for everyone. Annual I-Did-A-Block Businessman's Dog Race. UAF Museum Annual Open House (12/3/06) Noon to 5 p.m.  Fun for the whole family! Explore the Museum behind-the-scenes. Talk to the curators and collection managers. Visit with Alaska Native artists. Enjoy hands-on activities for kids. FREE!

27th Annual Sing-It-Yourself Messiah (12/17/06) 3 p.m., First Presbyterian Church - 547 Seventh Ave. Potential soloists should contact conductor Suzanne Summerville at (907) 456-1144 or send E-mail to sing@mosquitonet.com for an audition.

Alaska Dog Mushers Association Challenge Race #2 (TBA) Skijoring, sled dog races, held at the Dog Mushers Hall on Farmers Loop Road. Call for times 457-6874.

Birth of a King.Christmas Day (12/25/07). The Ranch Motel wishes you a very merry and blessed Christmas!

A Sparktacular Celebration (12/31/07) 7 to 9 p.m. Park early and stop by the Museum before and after the New Year’s Eve fireworks. Warm up with hot chocolate and cookies! Easy access to viewing areas. FREE! (907) 474-7505
